This new volume in the Corvina bilingual poetry series is the posthumous collection of prominent 20th century poet Miklos Radnóti.
Radnóti (1909-1944) was born into a Jewish family and studied French and Hungarian literature at the University of Szeged. After his marriage in 1935, he traveled to France, where he became involved with left-wing circles and established ties with the illegal Hungarian Communist Party. He wrote some activist poems and devoted much of his energy to translation due to strict censorship.
In 1943, Radnoti formally converted to Catholicism. However, he was deported to a labor camp in Yugoslavia in 1944. As the Russian army approached, the entire camp was led on a death march through Hungary. Radnóti, unable to walk, was shot to death by Hungarian guards and buried in mass grave along with twenty-one others. The mass grave was exhumed after the war, and Radnóti’s last poems were found in his trench coat pocket.
