Breuer Marcell (1902–1981) a 20. századi építészet és design egyik legjelentősebb alkotója. Világhírű magyar emigráns tervező, aki a Bauhausban tanult és dolgozott, majd építészete az Amerikai Egyesült Államokban teljesedett ki. Magyar barátaival és kollégáival élete végéig tartotta a kapcsolatot, anyanyelvét is megőrizte. Breuernek kevés tárgya jutott el Magyarországra, és épülete sem valósulhatott meg idehaza. Ennek a hiánynak a pótlására a Magyar Építészeti Múzeum és Műemlékvédelmi Dokumentációs Központ (MÉM MDK) célul tűzte ki egy komolyabb Breuer-gyűjtemény létrehozását, az intézmény meglévő, főleg dokumentumokból álló anyagából kiindulva. 2025-ben amerikai magántulajdonból két jelentősebb együttest sikerült megszerezni: az egyik Breuer irodájához és hajdani munkatársaihoz kapcsolódik, a másik pedig saját egykori nyaralójából származik. Az így Magyarországra került bútorok, makettek, könyvek, kiadványok és fényképek képezik a MÉM MDK Breuer-gyűjteményének törzsanyagát, amely hazánk és a régió legjelentősebb, a világhírű alkotóhoz kötődő kollekciója. A könyv ennek az egyedülálló gyűjteménynek a darabjait és Breuer építészetét mutatja be a családi házaitól brutalista építészetéig.

Marcel Breuer (1902–1981), a world-renowned Hungarian émigré, was one of the most significant figures in 20th-century architecture and design. After a period of study and work at the Bauhaus in Germany, during which he designed several iconic pieces of furniture, his architectural career reached its full potential in the United States of America, where he received international recognition. While Breuer maintained connections with his Hungarian friends and colleagues and remained fluent in his native language throughout his life, he did not design any buildings in Hungary; almost none of his personal effects or furniture are present in the country. To address this, the Hungarian Museum of Architecture and Monument Protection Documentation Center (HMA MPDC) set itself the goal of creating a more substantial Breuer collection to build on the institution’s existing holdings, which consisted mainly of documents. In 2025, the museum succeeded in acquiring several pieces of furniture, models, books, publications, and photographs from two significant, privately owned collections from America; one connected to Breuer’s office and his former collaborators, and the other from his own, one-time holiday home. These items now form the core material of the HMA MPDC Breuer Collection, the most important collection in Hungary and the region associated with this world-famous architect. This book presents the objects and materials that form this unique collection, along with Breuer’s residential and brutalist architecture.
