In unprecedented detail, this monograph presents the historiography of the first three hundred years of Hungarian history, the Christian kingdom of the Árpáds (1000-1301). Given that excellent summaries have been penned in that regard, the volume omits the historical research on Hungarian prehistory and the conquest period. The most highlighted topics include the emergence and development of Hungarian Byzantinology, and the research on the turbulent history of the Holy Crown. The selected timeframe extends over the period from the beginning of the professional historiography in Hungary (the last third of the 19th century) up to the present time. Alongside the institutional system (research institutes, universities), the major source publications, manuals, and historiographical methods (positivism, Geistesgeschichte, Marxism, scientific historiography), the work presents in detail the careers of the leading researchers, from Gyula Pauler and his contemporaries to Attila Zsoldos and today's other significant historians. The volume also discusses the long line of masters and disciples and provides a broad outline of the political context. Indeed, in one way or another, the latter has had a major influence on the study of the Árpád era.

Thoroczkay Gábornak, az ELTE Középkori Történeti Tanszéke docensének monográfiája - The Historical Research on the Árpád Era - From the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867) to the Present Day - eddig még nem látott részletességgel mutatja be a magyar történelem első háromszáz évének, az Árpádok keresztény királyságának (1000-1301) modernkori történetírását. A kötetből kimarad a magyar őstörténet és a honfoglalás korának történeti kutatása tekintettel arra, hogy e témában már kiváló tudománytörténeti összefoglalók születtek. A monográfia leginkább kiemelt témái közé tartozik a magyar bizantinológia kialakulása és fejlődése, valamint a Szent Korona viharos történetének kutatása. A kiválasztott időkeret a magyarországi hivatásos történetírás kezdetétől (a 19. század utolsó harmadától) napjainkig terjed. Az intézményrendszer (kutatóintézetek, egyetemek, levéltárak) mellett a legfontosabb forráskiadványok, kézikönyvek és a történetírói módszerek (pozitivizmus, szellemtörténet, marxizmus, tudományos történetírás) mellett a mű részletesen bemutatja a vezető kutatók pályáját Pauler Gyulától és kortársaitól Zsoldos Attiláig és napjaink más jelentős történészeiig. A kötet kitér a mesterek és tanítványok hosszú sorára is, és nagy vonalakban vázolja a mindenkori politikai környezetet is. Ez utóbbi ugyanis így vagy úgy, de a tárgyalt időszak jelentős részében nagyban befolyásolta az Árpád-kor tanulmányozását. A könyv különösen jó szolgálatot fog tenni a külföldi középkorkutatók szakmai eligazodásában.
