Ezek ábrázolásai mutatják a tárgyakat, amelyeket az elhunytak kezükben fognak, vagy a túlvilági képeket, a mitológia vonatkozó részeit, foglalkozásra utaló részleteket és még sok mást, amelyek révén megismerjük a temetési szokásokat, a hozzátartozók feladatait, az étkezési kötelezettségeket, a halott földöntúli utazásait és a halottkultuszhoz tartozó vallásos mentalitást.

A háromkötetes mű tartalmaz egy összefoglaló részt és a tárgyalt 992 pannoniai síremlék részletes katalógusát, valamint 1117 képtáblán 1487 felvételt.

Birth and death are integral parts of everyday life. The farther we go back in history to observe a specific period, the more likely we are to find that various customs go hand in hand with birth and death. This book analyses the Roman funerary customs on the basis of grave monuments unearthed on the Hungarian section of the territory of the province of Pannonia. The depictions on them either show objects held by the deceased, or pictures of the afterlife, or appropriate details from mythology, from the occupation or profession of the dead. There are many other sorts of depictions that also help us understand the funerary customs, the tasks of the bereaved, the dietary obligations, the transcendental travel of the dead, and the overall religious mentality related to the cult of the dead.

This three-volume book contains a comprehensive summary as well as a detailed catalogue of the 992 Pannonian grave monuments described in the book. 1487 photographs on 1117 tableaux are also provided.
