Gábor Pataki is the deputy director of the Art History Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, along with his colleagues György Szücs, András Zwickl, the museologist of the Hungarian National Gallery, and Gábor Andrási. As the century drew to a close, the four art historians agreed to update Lajos Németh’s comprehensive work about the history of Hungarian art three decades after its publication to reveal the changing face of Hungarian art as it both follows and adds to changes in European art. The book is irreplaceable on the Hungarian book market, as no comprehensive work has been published on the subject in over thirty years.
The text reads chronologically, and is accompanied by color reproductions of works of art that offer a broad view of the trends in 20th century Hungarian art, from the Nagybánya school to the Roman school, from Social-Realism to conceptual art, right up to the trends of the present day.


Pataki Gábor művészettörténész, a MTA művészettörténeti Kutató Intézetének igazgatóhelyettese három társával, Szücs Györggyel, illetve Zwickl Andrással, a Magyar Nemzeti Galéria muzeológusával, valamint Andrási Gábor művészettörténésszel együtt arra vállalkozott, hogy majd három évtizeddel Németh Lajos e témában írott műve után ismét összefoglalja immár végéhez közeledő századunk magyar művészetének változatos, sokrétű, az európai fejlődést követő-kiegészítő történetét. A kötet hézagpótló a magyar könyvpiacon, mert a témáról több mint 30 éve nem jelent meg teljességre törekvő áttekintés. A kronologikusan felépített szöveghez olyan színes illusztrációs anyag járul, amely átfogó képet ad a 20. század magyar művészetének legkülönbözőbb tendenciáiról, a nagybányai festészettől a római iskolán, a szocreálon át a koncept artig és napjaink legújabb irányzataiig.
