Alfred Stieglitz

This third volume in the acclaimed In Focus series examines the life and work of Alfred Stieglitz, concentrating on the Getty Museum`s considerable holdings of the work of this American master.
In his work, Stieglitz defined the modern movement in photography. In his periodical Camera Work, he championed photography as an art form; in his famous gallery An American Place, he promoted the work of other American modernists. As Naomi Rosenblum has said of him, he probably has had a more profound influence on the course of aesthetic photography in America than any other single individual.
Over fifty reproductions with accompanying commentaries by Weston Naef, curator of photographs at the Getty Museum, indicate both the range and depth of the Getty`s collection and the importance of Stieglitz`s contribution to the art of photography.
The book also includes the edited transcription of a colloquium on Stieglitz`s life and work. Participants were Emmet Gowin, photographer; Sarah Greenough, curator of photographs, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Charles Hagen, critic, the New York Times; John Szarkowski, former curator of photographs, Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Weston Naef, curator emeritus in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

"Contains more information about Stieglitz than is known by most dealers and curators." (Photograph Collector)
