Kertész, Moholy-Nagy, Capa ... Hungarian Photographers in America (1914–1989)
"This photography exhibition, made under the joint auspices of the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, presents a small selection of well-known photographers: the work of photographers of Hungarian origin who settled in the United States of America, and went on to change American visual culture. This statement is not merely the opinion of Hungarian experts: it is supported by research carried out by the director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Alex Nyerges, an art historian of partially Hungarian origin. This exhibition, which presents the work of thirty-two Hungarian artists, concentrates not only on the now internationally known photographers (André Kertész, László Moholy-Nagy, and Robert Capa) but also sheds light on the work of lesser-known photographers and important aspects of their lives. Therefore, the exhibited material holds many surprises even for Hungarian visitors, and contributes greatly to a better knowledge and understanding of the history of Hungarian photography." |
